Wasp Nest in a Cavity Wall – How Professionals Treat Hidden Nests in Watnall
A few minutes of careful, safe observation before you ring can help a technician find a hidden nest more quickly and arrive prepared.
Why your observations matter
When a nest is visible, assessing it takes seconds. When it is hidden inside a wall, the technician is partly relying on what you have seen. You do not need any special knowledge. You just need to answer a handful of plain questions as accurately as you can, from a safe position well away from the wall.
The details below take about ten minutes on a warm afternoon, and they often make the difference between a quick find and a long search around the building.
Think of it as a short briefing rather than an investigation. The more precisely you can describe the entrance, the less time the technician spends searching.
Many callers also tell us what they are worried about most: children in the garden, an elderly relative, a dog, a delivery driver at the door. Say it. It helps us understand what the household needs, and the technician can bear it in mind on the day.
The questions worth answering
- Where? Which wall of the building, and roughly how high above the ground.
- What opening? A vent, a gap in the pointing, a gap beside a window or something else.
- How busy? A few wasps a minute, or a constant stream.
- Since when? The date you first saw the traffic.
- Any indoor sightings? Which room, and where in the room.
- Any access issues? Locked gates, steep paths, a flat roof, a shared yard.
If you can take a photograph from a distance with a zoom, even better. Never go closer for a better picture.
If you are not sure about any item, say so. A truthful "I don't know" is more use than a guess.
It is worth adding which direction the wall faces, if you know. A wall that catches the afternoon sun is likely to be busier at certain times, and the technician can plan around that.
Safe ways to watch
Wasps at an entrance are in guard mode. Moving quickly, making vibrations or crowding the opening can all draw attention. Choose a spot several metres away, preferably with a clear path behind you so you can step back easily. Stay quiet and still for a few minutes and count how many wasps come and go in, say, sixty seconds.
Do not put anything near the hole to see what happens. Do not shine a torch into it. Stop watching if wasps begin to fly towards you, and walk away calmly rather than waving your arms.
If you have a partner or neighbour who can keep an eye on small children while you watch, take advantage of that. Distraction is how accidents happen, and the observer should be able to concentrate on keeping their distance from the wall.
Pick a time when the sun is on the wall, because that is when the traffic is easiest to see. A cold, damp morning can make the entrance look deserted, and you could mistakenly assume the problem has gone.
What we will tell you in return
Once you have described the situation, we will explain the fixed price and book a time that suits you. The technician is trained to deal with concealed nests and will approach through the entry point the wasps use. They are fully insured. Before they start, they will confirm what they intend to do, and they will not begin until you have agreed.
You can also ask whether the empty nest can be taken down afterwards, and whether the gap should be repaired by a builder. Those are good questions to put to the technician at the time of booking, so there are no surprises.
If you have any questions about the process, now is the time to ask. We would rather answer a dozen questions on the phone than have you feel uncertain when the technician arrives at your door.
You can also tell us whether the wasps seem to be heading in the same direction when they leave. It does not change the price, but it may help the technician understand where the colony is feeding.
Describing the building
Beyond where the wasps are, a few facts about the building itself are useful to share. Is it a detached house, a semi, a bungalow, a flat or a commercial unit? Is the wall brick, render or something else? Is there a conservatory, garage or extension nearby? None of this needs to be technical. It simply helps the technician picture what they will be walking up to.
Also let us know about any restrictions: a shared driveway, a locked gate, a key holder who is not at home, or a tenant who will need to be told in advance. If access to the wall involves crossing a neighbour's garden, speak to them first.
Give the postcode and a mobile number that someone will answer. That is all we need to organise the visit properly.
When you ring, have your address and postcode ready, and a rough idea of the best times for access. We will then explain how things work and fix a time with you, and you will know the price before anything else happens.
