Wasp Control for Nuthall Restaurants, Pubs and Commercial Premises

A garden wedding or summer function leaves no room for wasps, and this guide helps venue managers deal with a nest before the guests arrive.

The event is fixed, the nest is not

A function venue works to dates that cannot move. A wedding reception with a marquee on the lawn, a christening buffet or a summer party with a drinks reception on the terrace is booked months ahead. A wasp nest in the grounds can threaten all of it, and discovering one on the morning is the worst case. The answer is to look early and to act as soon as you see signs. In a mild spring, wasps begin building from late April, and by August a nest can hold thousands. A venue should check outdoor areas in good time before the busiest season starts.

Hotels have an additional issue. Rooms with balconies, windows left open for air and breakfast rooms looking onto a garden all let wasps in. A guest finding one on a pillow is more likely to mention it in a review than a guest who sees one on the lawn.

Walking the grounds before a big date

A calm inspection of the grounds a week or two ahead of an event is common sense. Do it with a colleague and keep a safe distance from any hedges, outbuildings and trees. Look for: - Wasps flying in and out of a hole in the ground. - Activity at the eaves of the main building, a gazebo or a summerhouse. - Insects crowding around bins, outdoor bars and food stations. - Grey papery material visible in a gap or sheltered corner. Tell the events team to report anything straight away, and give them a number to ring. If a nest is found near the ceremony area, car park or marquee, treat it as a reason to act now, not later.

Seasonal staff and agency workers may not know the grounds well. Ask the manager on duty to point out the area where the wasps have been seen and to explain what to do. A map of the site with the problem area marked is quick to produce and very effective.

Check the buildings as well as the lawns: the underside of a summerhouse roof, the eaves of the barn used for receptions and any old stone walls bordering the car park. These are quiet, dry spots that suit a queen in spring and attract less attention than a flowerbed.

Food, drink and the party itself

Buffets, desserts, wedding cake and sparkling drinks are all things wasps like. While you wait for treatment, make the area less inviting. Keep food covered until it is served, clear plates swiftly and empty bins often. Move bins well away from the guests. Lids on drinks jugs and straws in cups help. Ask caterers to follow the same approach and to tell you if they see wasps. Brief staff on how to behave: no swatting and no panicking. A calm member of staff who quietly moves a guest away from a wasp is much better than a scene. If someone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack, and ring 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, breathing difficulty, dizziness or a widespread rash.

Outdoor ceremonies bring a particular challenge, because guests stand still in rows for a long time. Think about the ground under the chairs, nearby hedges and the ceremony arch. If wasps are active on one side, shift the layout instead of hoping for the best, and brief the registrar or celebrant if needed.

Telling the couple or the organiser

If you have found a nest and a booking is imminent, it can be tempting to say nothing. A brief, honest word is usually better. Say that you have found a wasp nest in the grounds, that it is being treated by a trained technician and that you will confirm once it is done. Most organisers prefer to know. If a guest has a known allergy, ask the organiser to tell you. You can pass that to us when you book, and we will take it into account.

Do not offer guests assurances you cannot back up. Say what is being done and when, not that there will be no wasps at all. Wasps from other nests may still wander through during warm weather, and a sensible plan for covering food and drinks stays useful all summer.

Fixed price and flexible days

Treatment is £95 per nest, and an additional nest on the same property is £35 more. The price is confirmed on the phone before the technician visits, there is no call-out charge, and nothing happens until you agree. We are open seven days a week and offer same-day service, so a venue can book around its calendar. Our technicians are trained and the work is fully insured. We take domestic and commercial work, so a hotel, a guest house or a private estate with an events barn is covered. If the venue is leased, check the lease on who handles pest control.

Keep the contact number of a manager on site available for the day of the visit, and let the technician know of any events in the grounds. If a marquee crew is working, ask them to hold off near the nest until it has been dealt with, since heavy footsteps and tent poles can disturb it.

Wedding photographers, florists and musicians arrive early and work around the grounds. A quick word to each, passing on the area to avoid, is better than leaving it to chance.

Booking

Phone 0115 937 5117 or use the booking form on the contact page, and give us the event dates, a contact on site and a description of where the wasps are. We cover Nuthall and the area nearby.

A short note in your event file about when the nest was treated, and where it was, is a good habit. Next year you can inspect that area in the early part of the season and spot any new activity while it is still small.
