Wasp Control for Ilkeston Restaurants, Pubs and Commercial Premises

Where food is made, a wasp nest raises hygiene worries as well as sting risks, and this guide helps bakery and kitchen managers handle it sensibly.

Sugar, warmth and open doors

Few places are as inviting to a wasp as a bakery or small food factory. The smell of baking, sugary mixtures, warm air from extraction and doors that open for deliveries are all signals that food is nearby. A wasp that finds a way in can contaminate stock, disturb staff and cause trouble with customers. Managers worry, rightly, about the effect on food safety. We cannot advise on your food safety procedures or what an inspector would expect. Use your own system and your own advice. What we can offer is a prompt treatment that removes the source of the wasps, so you are not dealing with new arrivals day after day.

It helps to have a plain, written plan for who does what if a wasp is found inside. A production supervisor decides, a named person rings us, another person keeps a door shut. Without it, three people try to help at once and nobody takes responsibility.

Unlike a restaurant, a production kitchen may have strict rules about who enters certain areas. If the technician needs to approach a nest on an outside wall near a clean zone, say so, and tell us what the site requires on arrival, such as signing in or checking in at reception first.

Following the flight path

Foragers fly in a fairly straight line between the nest and the food, so watching them is useful. Standing safely back from a doorway for ten minutes may show you that wasps arrive from the same corner of a roof or along the same wall. Note the time of day, since wasps tend to be most active when it is warm. Possible nest sites around a food unit include: - Gaps under roof edges, soffits and fascias. - Wall cavities near extraction pipes and vents. - Yard stores, sheds and pallet stacks. - Hedges and trees along the boundary fence. - Neighbouring properties, whose nests may be sending foragers across. Do not climb up or reach into any gap.

Think about the building as well as the yard. Roof lights, ventilation louvres and extractor ducts are all openings through which a nest can get established or a forager can enter. A late-spring check from outside, on a dry day, for wasps going in and out of such openings could save you much trouble in August.

Keeping the production area protected

While the nest is waiting for treatment, reduce the chance of wasps getting in. Keep doors shut when not in use and consider a screen at loading doors. Cover ingredients and finished goods promptly. Clean spills and residues straight away, in the production area and in the yard. Check waste bins for tight lids and take rubbish out regularly. Staff should not attempt to swat or remove wasps by hand or with shop-bought products. Near open food, that is the worst way to deal with them. Tell team members to report any insect found inside, and to avoid blocking the entry points of any nest they have seen.

Where deliveries are frequent, agree a routine with the driver. Keep the outer door open only while goods are passing through and close it again straight away. If your loading door faces a nest, ask for deliveries to use another entrance until it has been treated.

Records and discretion

A food business tends to keep records. Note the date wasps were first seen, where, the date you booked treatment and the date it was done. Whether and how your own system requires you to log this is up to you, but a clear note is a useful reminder. Customers and visitors do not need a dramatic announcement. A short, factual response if someone asks is enough. If a team member is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack. Swelling of the face, lips or throat, breathing difficulty, dizziness or a widespread rash means 999.

If wasps have already reached finished stock, follow your normal procedure for dealing with the product and do not move the nest question to one side. Treating the nest does not replace your own checks; it simply stops fresh wasps arriving.

Price and arrangement

The treatment of a nest is £95 per nest, with another nest at the same premises costing £35 extra. The price is confirmed on the phone before the technician attends. There is no call-out charge, and nothing is done unless you agree. We work seven days a week, offer same-day service, and aim to complete the work in one visit by a trained, insured technician. Tell us when production is quietest, how the technician gets in and where food is stored, so the visit can be arranged around the working day. If you lease the unit, check the lease for who deals with pest control.

Some businesses run shifts through the night, and staff arriving on the first morning shift may meet a few wasps before anyone else. Leave a handover note for each shift so the people who see the insects first know what has been arranged.

Sweet smells carry a long way, so a unit that bakes early in the morning may find wasps gathering at the door by mid-morning. Noting the pattern each day for a few days gives you a good sense of how many nests may be involved.

Booking in Ilkeston

We cover Ilkeston and the surrounding area, for domestic and commercial customers alike. Telephone 0115 937 5117 or use the booking form on the contact page.

If the unit is part of a larger complex with several tenants, tell the landlord or managing agent, since a nest in a shared roof or boundary wall may need access from more than one party. We cover commercial and domestic sites, and can arrange a visit once the right person has agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to shut production for the visit?
It depends on where the nest is. Tell us the layout when you book and we can discuss the best arrangement.
Will treatment affect stored ingredients?
Ask the technician about this at booking, and tell us where the ingredients are kept relative to the nest.
Is one visit usually enough?
The aim is a single visit. If wasps keep appearing at the same place afterwards, tell us and describe what you see.
