Wasp Control for Hucknall Restaurants, Pubs and Commercial Premises

Sugar is the thing wasps want most, so sweet shops, ice cream counters and dessert bars need a sensible plan, and this guide sets one out for owners.

Why a sweet counter is a magnet

Sugary syrup, melted ice cream, fruit toppings and sticky cones are exactly what wasps look for in the late summer months. A dessert shop with a pavement queue, an open hatch or a few outdoor tables offers a constant supply. When the weather is warm, the smell travels, and foragers can find the spot from a good distance. The first sign is usually a wasp or two at the serving counter. Within a week or two, as the colony grows and natural food becomes scarcer, there can be dozens. Owners sometimes notice that the problem is worst at the end of the day, when bins are full and sticky surfaces have accumulated.

Seasonal outlets are exposed in a particular way. A kiosk, a trailer or a pop-up stall may be in place only for the summer, and the pitch it occupies may have been quiet all winter. A queen that settled in a gap in a nearby wall or the base of a hedge in spring will have a full colony by the time the stall is busiest.

Working out where they come from

You will not solve the problem by killing the wasps that land on your counter, since more will take their place. Instead, watch where they arrive from and where they go. A foraging wasp that has fed will fly back to the nest in a fairly straight line. If you notice the same direction repeated, you have a clue. Look for likely sites without getting close: - Gaps in the shopfront or roof edge. - Hanging baskets, planters and awnings. - Back yard stores and bin enclosures. - Neighbouring buildings and gardens. - Holes in the ground at the edge of a car park or green. Take notes and photographs from a distance and pass them on when you ring.

Staff who work the counter often notice patterns. They may see that wasps cluster around the bin at a certain hour, or that they arrive from the direction of the car park. Ask the team what they have noticed and write it down. Even small observations make it easier to explain the location over the phone.

Reduce the draw while you wait

Several habits make the spot less appealing. Wipe the counter and the hatch frequently with a damp cloth. Keep sauce, syrup and topping containers closed when not being used. Put used cones and cups in a lidded bin and empty it often. Rinse mop buckets and drains, which can hold sticky residue. Outdoors, use tables with lids on sugar and sauce containers, and clear them straight after customers leave. Position bins away from the queue. Staff should not wave or swat. If a wasp lands on a customer, a calm instruction to stay still and let it go is better than flapping.

It is worth looking at what customers do with leftovers. Half-eaten cones and tubs dropped on the pavement or left on a bench are a lasting attraction, and wasps will gather there as well as at your hatch. A sweep of the area in front of the shop every hour or two, and a bin placed some way off, can reduce the pull.

When a customer is stung

Have a simple plan. Wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack. Call 999 for any swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or breathlessness, dizziness or a widespread rash. Customers who know they are allergic may carry their own medication, and they should speak to their GP about their situation. Do not try to give medical advice yourself. If a member of your team has an allergy, tell us when you book. We cannot promise any particular result, but it lets us take it into account.

Children are the most likely to be stung by a wasp landing on a hand holding a cone. Staff can help by handing out napkins, suggesting families sit away from the bins and calmly moving a child away from a wasp rather than swatting it.

Price, speed and booking

Treating a nest costs £95 per nest, and an extra nest at the same premises is £35 on top. The figure is confirmed on the phone before the technician arrives, and the work does not go ahead until you have agreed it. There is no call-out charge. We work seven days a week and offer same-day service, so a busy shop need not wait for a quiet midweek spell. The technician is trained and the work is fully insured, and the aim is a single visit. If you rent the unit, check your lease or ask your landlord about who deals with pest control.

If you hire a pitch or rent a unit, check the terms to see who arranges pest control, since that depends on your agreement. Do not let that question delay the booking; the nest keeps growing while people decide who should ring.

Remember that kitchens and prep areas at the back deserve the same attention as the counter. A tub of syrup left uncovered, a bag of fruit waste or an unwashed blender can draw wasps through a back door. Close it whenever you can.

Contact

We cover Hucknall and the surrounding area, for homes and for businesses. Our phone number is 0115 937 5117, and the booking form on the contact page is there if you would rather write. Say when your shop is busiest and where the wasps seem to appear.

Keep a short note of the date you first saw wasps, the date of the visit and anything you noticed afterwards. If you trade from the same pitch next summer, that note tells you which corner to inspect in spring, when a young nest is far easier to spot and deal with. A quick check of hanging baskets and the shopfront roof edge costs a minute.

Frequently asked questions

Can we stay open while the nest is treated?
It depends on where the nest sits. Describe its position and your opening pattern when you book.
Should we stop selling ice cream outdoors for a few days?
That is your call. If the nest is close to the queue, moving the service indoors until it has been treated is sensible.
Will wasps stop coming straight after treatment?
Wasps from the treated nest should no longer arrive, but others from different nests may still wander in. Keep sticky surfaces clean.
